About the Montessori Method
“What the hand does the mind remembers” – Dr. Maria Montessori
These are activities that are given to help the child to take care of himself, others and also the physical environment that they belong to.
These activities include simple tasks that are familiar to the child such as sorting, washing, pouring, polishing, setting the table etc.
These also include activities of “grace and courtesy”, a part of the civilized community.
Children learn to complete a taken task. They develop self discipline, self confidence and to concentrate. Practical Life Activities help in extensive motor development which has a major role later in writing.
“The hand is the instrument of the Intelligence” – Dr. Maria Montessori
Children of this age group learn through senses rather than their intellect. The sensorial materials act as tools for children to refine their senses. Each material helps a child to isolate a specific quality: smell, size, weight, texture, flavour, colour etc. These materials help them to find an order. They also help them with their perception and observation, which leads to admiration for all that surrounds them .
“The more Knowledge that is made available to the child, the more he is stimulated to explore Language” – Dr. Maria Montessori
When a child walks into an environment he enriches the language that he / she have already acquired in the first environment that is their home. The child is taught language through a specific progression of lessons where he first becomes aware of the different sounds in a word. The Child then learns the language phonetically until the point where he is taught the different “rules” in a given language and the exceptions to those rules, he will need to know in order to spell & read fluently.
Children learn to use language intelligently with precision.
“This system in which a child is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses, also takes into account a child’s special aptitude for Mathematics” – Dr. Maria Montessori
The child first learns to count from 1-10 through the understanding of the concept that those numbers represent a specific amount. The math material in a Montessori environment helps the child to learn and understand the mathematical concepts, while working with the concrete materials that lead intuitively to abstract concepts. Thus, Montessori offers the child a strong & solid foundation in the understanding of mathematics.
“Never help the child with the task at which he feels he can succeed” – Dr. Maria Montessori
Montessori cultural activities typically include Geography, History, General Science, Botony, Zoology, Music & Art. The Montessori environment offers many opportunities for the young child to explore the world around him or her.
These activities are typically offered at a point of entry for any child in the environment as such they are significant for the child’s orientation to the environment (settling time). These activities provide the foundation for all works in the Montessori.
